Despite being hit by thunderstorms and flash flooding causing commuter chaos our Open Evening on June 23rd went ahead as planned. Many thanks to all who managed to get to our Learning and Development Centre at Stanwell across from Heathrow T5 for what proved to be a fun and informative, if somewhat soggy, evening for all.
Groups of invited quests from alternative education providers, local schools and children homes enjoyed a conducted tour across our site including our poly tunnel, growing plots, conservation area and shared in our exciting plans for a new harvesting and cooking project and a potential new woodworking enterprise in the barn.
Guests took the opportunity to talk directly to our trustees, tutors, support staff, volunteers and our young people about the benefits of learning at Green Corridor including accredited qualifications in horticulture, re-engagement back in the classroom, life skills development and opportunities to progress into local employment.
Of the 60 young people we supported intensively over the last 12 months 90% have special educational needs and disability (SEND). We helped over 25% into local employment, a figure 3 times greater than the national employment rate as stated by the DfE for young people with SEND.
We hope that with your support we can now secure funding to build our new on-site cookhouse and that job outcomes will increase even further as there are many local job vacancies in catering and hospitality that our young people would like to have an opportunity to fill.
“The overall plan for the expansion is encouraging. It’s certainly an enterprise and educational setting that would get EAP’s full support.”
“This is truly one of the most inspirational projects I have ever visited. The passion of the staff is reflected in their animated conversation when talking of the future expansion/development of G.C.”
This wonderful feedback mirrored comments from all our guests and demonstrated that the aim of raising our profile and gaining support for our growth plans was achieved. However, as many invited guests were unable to make the event due to the unforeseen weather conditions we plan to run another open evening in early September.
Many thanks once again to our partners Heathrow, Marriott Hotel and the Holiday Inn as without your valued support such events would be impossible for us to put on.
