We were joined at our Learning and Development Centre on Wednesday 30/03/16 by a very keen group of staff from the Holiday Inn, Nr Heathrow to help with urgent projects as the warm season gets underway. The group was split into two teams and worked alongside our learners.
One team worked with Collin to create planters from old tyres. These were filled with an assortment of spring flowers to try and add some colour to the main entrance of the GC Learning and Development Centre.
The second team worked alongside Sean clearing a massive stretch of our fence line from bramble.
After lunch the teams reconvened to start the ground-breaking work on preparing a new pollinator pond in our wildlife area. This involved clearing ivy and debris from the area before starting to lay the foundations.
Many wheelbarrows full of soil were carted and used to mound up and landscape the sides of the pond to create a safe slope for insects to get easy refreshment without falling in.
Reece, one of our regular learner volunteers, did an excellent job in take the lead on a task that involved planting up beds with strawberries, peas and tomatoes from our polytunnel. Reece is currently working towards his Level Two Certificate in Practical Horticulture Skills so this gave him an opportunity to show off his knowledge and helped with his self-confidence.
Feed back from the group included the following comment:-
“Really nice to meet Reece. Was interesting to hear what he does and about the qualifications”
Finally with still more energy left, the whole team helped us build another section of dead-hedge around the back of the site.
These were huge tasks that would’ve taken us many days to accomplish so a very “Big Thank” you to the team from Holiday Inn you were amazing!
