Thanks to your support, and the support of the Big Give team, we’ve raised a fantastic £8,575 so that our young people can transform an unused space into a tranquil sensory garden!
Our young people, with special educational needs, want to transform an unused space at our Learning Centre near Heathrow Airport, turning it into a Sensory Garden. Access to this thoughtful and creatively designed space will help restore attention, aid recovery from fatigue and enhance mental focus.
For some of the leaners we support the challenge is not only completing their horticultural qualification, for some of them it may be understanding their emotions or struggling with the challenges of mental health difficulties. We want to create a sensory garden, called Breathing Spaces, so that these young people have a specialised area to go when these challenges get too much.
We plan to fill this space with a water feature, a seated area surrounded by long grass and calming camomile and covered shelters to shade from the harsh weather. In this space learners will learn new and effective ways to identify and understand their emotions and the best way to cope with them. They will be able to do this on their own, preparing them for the future and allowing them to spend more time learning!
