Our annual Preparation for Adulthood Day was as inspiring as ever!

Every young person deserves the opportunity to build a future that reflects their ambitions, interests and potential. However, navigating the support, services and opportunities available to young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) as they move into adulthood can be challenging. That’s why bringing our local community together is so important.

Held at Green Corridor, our annual Preparation for Adulthood Day brings together local support providers, specialist colleges, organisations, families and individuals to share knowledge, build connections and explore the opportunities available to young people as they take their next steps towards adulthood.

The event welcomes our current and former learners, alongside young people, families and local schools who may benefit from discovering the support available in their community. By bringing so many organisations together under one roof, we aim to make information more accessible and help families feel better informed about the options available for the future.

A day full of activities, learning and discovery

There was plenty to explore across the Green Corridor site, with a range of interactive activities giving visitors a taste of how we help our learners develop practical life skills, confidence and independence.

From making pizzas and decorating cookies to planting pumpkin seeds, there were opportunities to get involved, try something new and learn through hands-on experiences.

Visitors could explore our horticulture and gardening activities, discovering more about growing plants and developing practical skills. Our pumpkin seed planting activity encouraged learners to get involved in growing something of their own, while fruit kebab making offered a fun, practical way to develop food preparation skills.

In our pizza-making activities, learners could follow instructions, make choices and enjoy creating something from scratch. Cookie decorating added another creative element to the day, giving everyone the chance to personalise their treats and have a little fun along the way!

Other activities highlighted the everyday skills that are so important when preparing for adulthood, including:

  • Hair styling and grooming: exploring personal care, presentation and self-confidence.

  • Our charity shop and Functional Skills: bringing practical tasks together with opportunities to develop English, maths and everyday problem-solving skills.

  • Preparing for Adulthood: exploring employment and education, independent living, good health, and friends, relationships and community participation.

  • Making choices activities: encouraging young people to express their preferences, make decisions and develop greater independence.

  • Quiet room: providing a calmer space for visitors who needed a quieter environment during the event.

These activities reflect the skills we work on with our learners every day. Whether it is following a recipe, making an independent choice, practising personal care or learning to grow plants, each experience can contribute to building confidence and preparing for life beyond education.

Discovering support and opportunities for the future

Alongside the activities, visitors had the opportunity to meet a range of local support providers, specialist colleges and organisations working with young people and adults with SEND.

These conversations are an important part of the day. Moving into adulthood can bring many questions for young people and their families, from finding employment and accessing further education to exploring supported living, community activities and ongoing support.

By connecting families with organisations that can help, we hope to make those next steps feel more achievable and ensure people know where to turn for information, advice and guidance.

Preparation for Adulthood Day is all about discovering, collaborating, networking and learning. It creates space for conversations, new connections and ideas that can continue long after the event has finished.

The Clearing: Building Connections and Supporting Our Community

Our amazing members from The Clearing, Green Corridor’s adult social hub, played a special part in this year’s Preparation for Adulthood Day!

Throughout the event, our members proudly shared what The Clearing is all about, helping visitors learn more about our social hub and how we support adults with SEND to build friendships, develop skills and enjoy new experiences within their community.

They spoke to visitors about the opportunities available at The Clearing, helping raise awareness of our provision for adults with SEND and sharing how it could benefit them or their loved ones. Our members also lent a helping hand to fellow exhibitors, showing the wonderful spirit of teamwork and community that makes the day so special.

We are incredibly proud of our members for getting involved, building connections and helping spread the word about The Clearing. Their enthusiasm and willingness to support others perfectly reflect what our social hub is all about: creating opportunities, fostering friendships and helping adults with SEND feel connected and valued.

A huge well done to everyone who represented The Clearing so brilliantly!

Welcoming the Mayor of Hillingdon

This year, we were especially delighted to welcome the Mayor of Hillingdon, Cllr Reeta Chamdal.

It was a pleasure to meet the Mayor, share more about Green Corridor’s work and highlight the vital role specialist further education plays in supporting young people with SEND as they prepare for adulthood.

The visit provided a valuable opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of specialist provision and the wider SEND sector, as well as celebrate the organisations and individuals working together to create brighter futures for young people in our community.

Preparing for adulthood, together

At Green Corridor, we believe preparing for adulthood goes far beyond qualifications. It is about recognising each individual's strengths, building on their interests and equipping them with the skills and confidence to take their next steps.

A huge thank you to every exhibitor, guest, family and member of the Green Corridor team who helped make this year's event such a success.

The knowledge, collaboration and commitment shared throughout the day demonstrated just how much can be achieved when our community comes together with a common purpose.

Together, we can open minds, open opportunities and help young people see what their future could hold!
